Crystal Park Baptist Church (Part 1)

Family Portrait, September 2011.
Crystal Park Baptist Church is a gathering of Christians affiliated to the Baptist Union of Southern Africa which meets East of Johannesburg.
In 1983 two Christians with a heart for evangelism, Mr Vedder and Mr Kelly, undertook it upon themselves to do door to door visitations in the Crystal Park area. It wasn’t long before the need to start a Sunday school programme in the neighbourhood was impressed upon their hearts which was facilitated in the home of Mr and Mrs Hegarty.
Morning services began in the home of the Vedder’s in 1984. The first service, led by the Rev Harold Mason, had 15 attendees.
The Rev Richard Akers, at that time a second year student at the Baptist Theological College, became involved with the fellowship in 1985. Between 1986 and 1987 1 Clydesdale Road Crystal Park was purchased and the church building was erected although it wasn’t until 1989 that the Rev Fred Dennison officially commissioned it.
