A replica of this grand old painting hangs in the foyer of the Baptist Theological College in Randburg, South Africa. |
A few months ago I read Iain Murray's The Forgotten Spurgeon. The Prince of Preachers tale seemed alight with passionate zeal and knife edged doctrine; oh Lord but could we all live our lives out in this way!
In late December when I began pulling together the content for this website I was struck by how many of the Rev Syd Hudson-Reed's subjects hailed from Spurgeon's College, in fact how many of them received direct commission to travel to this foreign land in order to herald the Gospel and claim it for our King from Charles Spurgeon himself.
I have no doubt that there are many more to be listed amongst the founders of the Baptist church in South Africa but these are the names that I've come across so far (highlighted items link to personal mini biographies):
Rev John Russel
Rev W.A. Phillips
Rev Henry Thomas Peach
Rec Frank Oldrieve
Rev D.J. Martin
Rev D.H. Hay
Rev Alfred Hall
Rev Charles Garratt
Rev Edward G Evans
Rev George William Cross
Rev Ernest Baker

Praise God for the legacy of Charles Spurgeon and Spurgeon's College and how God used them as instruments to build His church to His glory. May our lives to burn with fervour and may our speech be ever true to God's Word. Amen!
